First time questions?

I have really wanted to adopt a dog in the near future, and I have some questions for dog owners: What flea / tick / hearworm medicine has proved more effective and what are the approximate annual cost of the same for a medium sized dog? How to discipline your dog? I've heard everything from "shouting to the dogs" "Hit with a rolled up newspaper", "Step on the legs if he jumps."
