My dog gets into things when we're home! How I can get him to stop?

My husband and I adopted a dog 3-4 years old last October, and love to pieces! She is a great dog, but sometimes when we are not home it will make things and chew on them and find them on the floor or somewhere where they put on. For example, I took Scrubs Season 2 DVD from the shelf and chewed a little. She has taken our bag of dice and dice scattered across the floor, but never eaten. Has anyone had success with a vibration / shock collar dog training?
